Romney And The Forty-Seven Percent

Willard Mitt Romney has been having fun with a couple of statements. One is about the "Obama Apology Tour," something that has been branded "Pants on Fire" by Politifact.org a number of times. Another is the meme that Obama took the work requirement out of welfare, a claim that has likewise been debunked time and time again.

And then there's the "forty-seven percent" of American households that don't pay income tax. That one is true. Mostly. (It's 46-point-something percent, actually.) Here's CBS on that claim:

And where do those forty-seven percent live? Hint: They live in Romneyland:

How many of those forty-seven percent make more than $211,000 per year? 105,000. http://goo.gl/sLZyl

How did it come about that all these people pay no Federal income tax? The Bush tax cuts:

And it's not just people who don't pay taxes, although Willard Mitt Romney has informed us that "corporations are people, my friend."

Here, by the way, is a surprisingly cogent explanation of the "forty-seven-percent" issue by Josh Barro, appearing on Bloomberg News.
